Join the movement to save The Lost Horses

Every year, over 20,000 American horses are shipped across the border to be slaughtered in Mexico and Canada for human consumption overseas. Although commercial horse slaughter for human consumption no longer takes place within the United States, our equines are funneled into this dark industry for profit.

These are racehorses, ex-show jumpers, discarded lesson ponies, wild horses, donkeys.
Athletes, therapy partners, and companions.

The Lost Horses campaign was created to expose and end this pipeline—shining a light on the horses who disappear and building the public pressure needed to stop it. The Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 1661 / S. 775) would permanently end this practice by banning both domestic horse slaughter and the export of American horses for slaughter abroad, finally closing the loophole that has allowed it to continue.

We, A Coalition of Voices for America’s Horses, are proud to join The Lost Horses campaign, led by The Wild Beauty Foundation, in calling for an end to the brutal and deeply un-American practice of slaughtering American horses for human consumption and for the passage of federal protections for America’s horses, including the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act.

This legislation has earned significant bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress, as well as the backing of more than 80% of the American people across party lines.

Momentum is growing as an expanding coalition of artists, athletes, advocates, and citizens raises its voice on behalf of these animals.

And yet, each year, thousands of horses — including former racehorses, show horses, lesson ponies, work horses, donkeys, and federally protected wild horses — are still purchased by kill buyers, packed into overcrowded trailers, and shipped across state lines and international borders into Mexico and Canada for slaughter.

These animals endure terror, injury, exhaustion, and profound suffering, all to satisfy a foreign demand for horsemeat overseas. It is a grim reality, and one that does not reflect the values of the American people.

We can do better than this.

Horses are part of the American story. They are our companions, our partners in work and sport, and a source of healing for children, veterans, and communities across this country. They have served us with loyalty and grace. To allow them to be funneled into a slaughter pipeline for profit is not only cruel, it is a betrayal of the bond so many Americans hold sacred.

Horse slaughter serves no legitimate American interest. It doesn’t make us stronger or safer, and it certainly doesn’t make us proud. It benefits only a small number of profiteers exploiting a loophole at the expense of animals who once trusted us.

Congress has the power to close this pipeline, protect America’s horses from unimaginable suffering, and leave behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and courage.

We urge you to act.

Sincerely,

A Coalition of Voices for America’s Horses

In 2025, more than 25,000 horses, both domestic and wild, were shipped out of the U.S. to slaughter. Enough is enough. It’s time to pass the SAFE Act and end this cruel practice once and for all.
